The best way to save fuel is to walk or ride a bicycle. If you do this for your shorter trips it is amazing just how much fuel can be saved. It is also great exercise.(saves money too)
Many people cover some pretty impressive distances on bicycles. (commuting 20 miles is not that uncommon). Extra bonus is that it emits virtually no co2. A bicycle is quite cheap to set up and will pay for itself in virtually no time at all.
The very best way to save gas right now in your vehicle is to slow down! Studies show that you will increase your gas mileage 6% for every 5 miles per hour that you slow down.
I am looking into building a gas reformer for a vehicle which takes a small amount of gasoline and separates the hydrogen from it and adds that to the air intake. It should increase mileage by 20%. We'll see. They are available commercially at

but the are kind of espensive and saving money is the idea, right?
The best fuel saver is YOU.
Last week I was talking to a fleet manager, a guy who takes care of automobiles for a small company. He said fuel economy of his vehicles can vary by as much as 20% just by who is driving and how they drive.
You can save even more by trip-linking, carpooling... ahhh. you know all this.
What you might not have thought about is MOVING. Choose where you live and/or work, so transit works well for you. (an extreme case of this would be moving to NYC or San Francisco, where transit is how everyone gets to work.)
There are many "UFO believers" and snake-oil salesmen who will try to tell you they have some magic product to give better fuel economy. None of them work, just ask them to take it to a university to have their claims checked out. Outside of hybrids, there is no free lunch.
There is a product called CA40 (www.ca40g.com) that guarantees 10% increase in mileage. In a lot of vehicles it has been reported to do much better than that. It was designed for, and works much better in diesel engines. I used it in my work vehicle and it did increase my mileage the advertised 10%. The only problem is I get such poor mileage (around 7mpg) the 10% saving in mileage really doesn't offset the cost. I don't know the exact price but it's around $100 per quart.
